The
name comes from the Greek shepherd who was granted immortality to be
with his love Diana; Endymion was the god of youth and fertility.
This superkrewe is one of the great success stories in modern Carnival,
beginning as a small organization in Bayou St. John and within 7 years
becoming one of the largest krewes ever. Well-known for providing
the celebrations with the S. S. Endymion, the largest float in history,
the krewe holds an annual Extravaganza which is held in the Superdome
right after the parade. Attendance for the event routinely tops
out in the tens of thousands.
